    A compression pylon for an aircraft with a wing-mounted engine, that does not cause supersonic airflow to occur within the fuselage-wing-pylon-nacelle channel is presented. The chord length of the pylon is greater than the local chord length of the wing to which it is attached. The maximum thickness of the pylon occurs at a point corresponding to the local trailing edge of the wing. As a result, the airflow through the channel never reaches supersonic velocities

    A means for extracting rotational energy from the vortex created at aircraft wing tips which consists of a turbine with blades located in the crossflow of the vortex and attached downstream of the wingtip. The turbine has blades attached to a core. When the aircraft is in motion, rotation of a core transmits energy to a centrally attached shaft. The rotational energy thus generated may be put to use within the airfoil or aircraft fuselage

    Improving the method of calculating electronic properties of narrow bandgap semiconductors

    A previously developed code for calculating the mobility of charge carriers in narrow bandgap semiconductors does not predict the correct temperature dependence in all cases. It is thought that this is due to the way the electronic screening of the carriers is treated in the model. The objective of this research is to improve the handling of the screening by going beyond the current first Born approximation. Much of this work is directly related to the alloy semiconductor Hg sub 1-xCd sub xTe which is important for infrared detectors and is a good candidate for microgravity crystal growth. The principal conclusion, so far, is that the major difficulty is probably the treatment of short range screening at higher temperatures

    Shape correction of thin mirrors in a reconfigurable modular space telescope

    In order to facilitate the construction of future large space telescopes, the development of low cost, low mass mirrors is necessary. However, such mirrors suffer from a lack of structural stability, stiffness, and shape accuracy. Active materials and actuators can be used to alleviate this deficiency. For observations in the visible wavelengths, the mirror surface must be controlled to an accuracy on the order of tens of nanometers. This paper presents an exploration of several mirror design concepts and compares their effectiveness at providing accurate shape control. The comparison test is the adjustment of a generic mirror from its manufactured spherical shape to the shape required by various off-axis mirrors in a segmented primary mirror array. A study of thermal effects is also presented and, from these results, a recommended design is chosen

    We previously constructed a single molecular clock to date insect evolution that remains a cornerstone within entomological dating. The insect clock predicts that triatomine bugs, the vectors of South American trypanosomiasis, originated with the formation of South America. We addressed this hypothesis using the insectivorous reduviid bugs and their phylogenetic relationship with the haematophagous reduviid bugs, as well as their biogeographic distribution. Putative paraphyly or monophyly of Triatominae, by non-haematophagous reduviids, have both previously been hypothesized and identified. We sampled a broad range of predatory reduviids, viz. Ectrichodiinae, Emesinae, Hammacerinae, Harpactorinae, Reduviinae, Salyavatinae, Steniopodainae and Vesciinae, including both New World and Old World representatives and sequenced the nuclear 28S ribosomal gene locus and the mitochondrial loci 5' cytochrome oxidase 1 (cox1 [COI]), cox1 3', cytochrome oxidase 2 (cox2 [COII]) and cytochrome oxidase b (cob [cytb]). Robust evidence for the monophyly of Triatominae was observed in 5/5 loci using codon/nucleotide (28S) based maximum likelihood phylogenies, 3/5 loci using codon-based Bayesian phylogenies and in cox2 using amino acid Bayesian phylogenies. Several South American members of the Reduviinae, that are morphologically and phylogenetically a sister group to triatomine bugs, have a modal divergence date with the Triatominae of 109-107 million years ago (MYA). This creates a scenario where the closest (non-haematophagous) ancestor to triatomine bugs evolved immediately prior to the breakup of Gondwanaland whilst the triatomine bugs evolved 95MYA, putatively linking the origin of haematophagous behaviour to the origin of South America and in particular infers a delayed onset to the evolution of haematophagy. The placement of the enigmatic tribe Bolboderini as an ingroup to the Triatominae monophyly, confirms the 95MYA node as the most ancient in the subfamily

    Improvement of program to calculate electronic properties of narrow band gap materials

    The program was improved by reprogramming it so it will run on both a SUN and a VAX. Also it is easily transportable as it is on a disk for use on a SUN. A computer literature search resulted in some improved parameters for Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Te and a table of parameters for Hg(1-x)Zn(x)Te. The effects of neutral defects were added to the program, and it was found, as expected, that they contribute very little to the mobility at temperatures of interest. The effect were added of varying the following parameters: dielectric constants, screening parameters, disorder energies, donor and acceptor concentrations, momentum matrix element, different expressions for energy gap, and transverse effective charge

    Ion beam sputtering in electric propulsion facilities

    Experiments were undertaken to determine sputter yields of potential ion beam target materials, to assess the impact of charge exchange on beam diagnostics in large facilities, and to examine material erosion and deposition after a 957 hr test of a 5 kW-class ion thruster. The xenon ion sputter yield of flexible graphite was lower than other graphite forms especially at high angles of incidence. Ion beam charge exchange effects were found to hamper beam probe current collection diagnostics even at pressures from 0.7 to 1.7 mPa. Estimates of the xenon ion beam envelope were made and predictions of the thickness of sputter deposited coatings in the facility were compared with measurements
